Overview
Attachment style describes the nervous system's default assumptions about closeness — whether connection is available when sought, whether bids for proximity are safe to make, whether a partner's distance signals threat or simply space. What happens when two nervous systems' relational defaults meet in sustained closeness is not a simple blend of those two defaults. It is an interaction: each partner's template encountering the other's template, producing patterns that neither template predicts on its own.
This section maps the ten pairings the four attachment styles produce. Each is a distinct dynamic with its own characteristic shape, its own friction points, and its own developmental possibilities.
The Two-Dimensional Architecture
The four attachment styles emerge from two underlying dimensions of internal working models, established in Bartholomew and Horowitz's (1991) foundational work and confirmed across decades of subsequent research.
The first dimension is the model of self — the internalized sense of one's worthiness of care. A positive model of self carries the working assumption that one is worthy of closeness and that bids for connection will generally be welcomed. A negative model of self generates persistent anxiety about whether love is reciprocated and stable.
The second dimension is the model of others — the internalized belief about whether others are available in close relationships. A positive model of others supports proximity-seeking: the nervous system defaults to expecting that closeness will be met. A negative model of others generates avoidance: the nervous system has learned that closeness carries risk and that self-sufficiency offers more reliable safety.
The four styles are the four combinations these two dimensions produce:

This matrix maps directly onto the anxiety × avoidance measurement framework that standard attachment instruments use: anxiety tracks with a negative model of self; avoidance tracks with a negative model of others. The ten pairings are not arbitrary — they are the systematic products of how two working models interact when two people sustain closeness over time.
Same-Style Pairings
When both partners carry the same attachment template, the pairing amplifies what that template produces.
Two Secure Partners — both nervous systems carry consistent-responsiveness defaults. Conflict tends to be operational rather than identity-laden: disagreements about what to do rather than about what the disagreement means. Neither partner reads ordinary disruption as structural evidence about the relationship's safety, which means repair is relatively straightforward and freed-up attention can be directed toward the relationship's actual content and direction.
Two Anxious-Preoccupied Partners — both nervous systems run hyperactivation strategies. The pairing can produce mutual emotional intensity and genuine attunement, but during conflict the doubled activation creates risk of escalation: neither partner holds a deactivation counterweight. The pair's resource is the depth of mutual attunement; the risk is co-regulation becoming co-escalation when the relational system activates.
Two Dismissive-Avoidant Partners — both nervous systems default to deactivation. The pair tends to be stable and low-conflict, with both partners comfortable at emotional distance. The characteristic risk is gradual disconnection without either partner registering it as a problem — when both nervous systems are at ease with distance, neither generates the signal that repair is needed until the disconnection has become structural.
Two Fearful-Avoidant Partners — both partners carry high anxiety and high avoidance simultaneously, wanting closeness and being threatened by it in the same moment. The pairing has the highest potential for instability among same-style pairings, with both partners' approach-avoidance oscillations potentially amplifying rather than stabilizing each other.
Cross-Style Pairings — Secure-Paired
Pairings that include at least one Secure partner have empirical support as conditions that can facilitate earned security for an insecure partner over time — though this is a tendency rather than a guarantee, and the dynamic is not reducible to the Secure partner doing repair work on behalf of the relationship.
Secure and Anxious-Preoccupied — the Secure partner's consistent responsiveness provides the repeated disconfirmation the Anxious template is reading for: accumulated experience of the bond holding across friction, without the variable responsiveness that keeps the Anxious relational system at elevated activation. Over time, consistent evidence of stable availability tends to lower the Anxious partner's activation threshold.
Secure and Dismissive-Avoidant — the Secure partner's tolerance for both closeness and distance allows the Dismissive partner to approach and withdraw without the withdrawal becoming the relationship's central friction. A Secure partner who is neither hurt by space nor in need of continuous contact does not activate the engulfment signal that drives deeper Dismissive deactivation.
Secure and Fearful-Avoidant — the most complex of the Secure-paired dynamics. The Fearful partner's oscillation between approach and avoidance requires the Secure partner to hold steady through both movements without reading either as resolution or rejection. A Secure partner with the equanimity to be consistently available through the oscillation provides the most consistent disconfirmation of the Fearful template's worst predictions.
Cross-Style Pairings — Insecure
Three pairings involve two insecure styles meeting each other. These produce the highest-friction dynamics in the matrix — not because insecure individuals cannot form valuable partnerships, but because two distinct protective templates are in continuous contact without a Secure counterweight.
Anxious-Preoccupied and Dismissive-Avoidant — the most-discussed pairing in the attachment literature. The Anxious partner's hyperactivation strategy meets the Dismissive partner's deactivation strategy, and each partner's protective response reads as threat to the other's relational system, generating the pursue-withdraw cycle that the demand-withdraw literature documents as one of the most consistent patterns in relationship difficulty.
Anxious-Preoccupied and Fearful-Avoidant — the Anxious partner's pursuit meets the Fearful partner's simultaneous hunger for and fear of the closeness the Anxious partner offers. The Fearful partner's oscillation — at moments approaching the Anxious partner's pursuit, at other moments withdrawing from it — can read to the Anxious template as precisely the kind of variable responsiveness the system is calibrated to respond to with heightened activation.
Dismissive-Avoidant and Fearful-Avoidant — both partners carry avoidance as a primary default, but from structurally different origins. Dismissive deactivation emerges from a stable model of self combined with a negative model of others; Fearful avoidance from destabilized models of both simultaneously. The pair can find equilibrium around shared distance, but the Fearful partner's anxiety dimension introduces an instability the Dismissive partner's equanimity may not be positioned to hold.
What Pair Dynamics Predict and Don't Predict
The empirical literature supports some claims about attachment-pair outcomes and not others.
What pair dynamics describe: interaction patterns — the characteristic shapes that emerge when two nervous systems' relational defaults are in sustained contact. The pursue-withdraw cycle in A×D pairings. The potential for earned security in Secure-paired configurations. The risk of co-escalation in A×A pairings. These are empirically grounded and substantively real tendencies.
What pair dynamics do not predict: relationship outcomes. The Anxious-Preoccupied × Dismissive-Avoidant pairing is associated with lower relationship satisfaction across multiple studies; it is not associated with certain dissolution. Many A×D couples sustain long partnerships. The pair dynamic is one factor among several, not a deterministic outcome predictor. The same holds for every pairing in this matrix.
Attachment style is also modifiable. The earned-security finding in the empirical literature documents real instances of insecure-to-secure style change in adulthood, typically through sustained relational experience that consistently disconfirms the original template's worst predictions. Pair dynamics interact with this possibility but do not determine it.
